Thankful!

This post is a couple of weeks late but I still wanted to publish it.... :D In the U.S. we just had our Thanksgiving holiday. And rather than go through the history of Thanksgiving (which is important too), I just want to say how thankful I am for many things. It's amazing how life twists and turns into these intriguing paths that never make it boring. And it is also amazing how God organizes everything into His own perfect timing. I know that I've always wondered about the timing of things in my life, not necessarily resentfully, but curiously as well as sometimes a bit impatiently; and I can't say anything except that however things turn out, it has always been with God's impeccable timing and my lesson to learn to wait for that. And so, I am thankful for His timing, and His provision of love, life, and liberty. The love of family, friends, old and new people in my life, and especially the love of my fiance who is truly the perfect partner for me. I am thankful fo

K.I.S.S.

My friend and former coworker/work mentor passed away recently and unexpectedly. It makes one think about the brevity of life and how it shouldn't be taken for granted. So here's my attempt at my farewell to her....K.I.S.S. was something that she used to say quite a bit.. Sandy, I can't believe you're gone....I want to call your number to see if you will answer because it seems so surreal. I was going to call you and tell you to put me on your calendar this winter; to tell you that I was bringing Alex with me so you could finally meet him. I wanted to tell you about some of my funny babysitting stories as well as about my kitty. I was looking forward to having lunch or dinner with you and Moe. And now, it's not going to be the same when I go home for the winter..... But wherever you are, I hope you're at peace. No more craziness to deal with here on earth. I will miss you a lot..... And I'll try my best to "Keep It Simple Stupid".....

Awesome wonder

I think there's no bad mood or ho-hum day that a night sky filled with hundreds of stars can't cure, especially when looking up at it with someone you love. I stargaze often because it reminds me of how awesome the universe is and how my little self and my bad day is not at the center of my world or THE world. Not only that but stars just fill me with wonder. So yesterday my boyfriend and I were star-gazing, and though I'd had a headache-filled looooooong day, all of that seemed to vanish in the distance as I craned my neck with him, looking up at twinkling lights, bright solid lights, and trying to put together the constellations. As we looked up at the sky together, we both found ourselves looking forward to the return of our old friend Orion despite the noticeably cooler air indicating the onset of fall around the corner. The star-filled sky is an awesome sight to behold, any night of the year on Long Island, but yesterday it just got decidedly more awesome as I gasped e

Kid Logic

I enjoy talking with kids cuz they say the funniest things. It's so refreshing how kids see the world sometimes--simple and matter-of-fact. I babysit my landlords' kids, and one of them is a little over 2 years old. Today I decided to brave the trampoline with him and after a lot of jumping, running, and falling over me, he stopped to sit down and have this conversation with me: Harrison, 2 years old, to me: "Can you hold my feet?"  Me: "Why?"  Harrison: "I don't want them any more."  Me: "You don't want them anymore?"  Harrison: "Yeah."  Me: "But they don't come off."  Harrison: "My shoes come off."  Me, trying not to laugh: "Yeah, but your feet don't."  Harrison: "Does your feet come off?"  Now that's what I call "kid logic". And I think it made my day. LOL!

I love summer!

Image
Summer is my favorite season, despite the heat that comes along with it. What's more awesome is that living on Long Island provides close access to the beach so I'm trying to go more often than I have been previously. I just loooooove Long Island in the summer!!

My Little Thoughts #13

I've been posting little thoughts on Facebook for a while now (considering I'm up to number 13, having started at 1). So I thought I'd share them on my blog. I began doing this after reading some of the interesting things that would be printed on Starbucks coffee cups. So now I have my own version, only you don't have to buy a hot beverage at Starbucks to read it! :) At some point I'll catch you up on all my previous little thoughts, but for now, here's #13 (and no, I'm not superstitious): "I guess it's human nature to always make a mountain out of a mole hill...."

Card sample :)

Crafty ideas

I've got a few projects in the making and at the encouragement of a friend I thought I'd post some to see if there are any people interested in buying handmade stuff. This is my "feeler" blog post. :) I make cards (I'll post some pictures soon), decorate little lids for small containers like the one here, and have a couple more projects in the making. I use as many recycled items as I can (things that would normally go into the trash or the recycler). Contact me if you are interested in something and be on the look-out for more posts and perhaps even a separate blog for this. :) Thanks!!

World Cup 2010 Fever

Image
I don't know about you, but I've got World Cup fever. Of course, it's been quite distracting from doing work on my dissertation proposal; BUT, what an exciting first stage it was - with plenty of surprises! All the teams I have been rooting for have advanced to the 2nd round where the knockout begins, and boy have I been glued to the TV! Which teams? South Korea, Chile, and the U.S.A. Today begins the knockout, and South Korea plays Uruguay (currently trailing 0-1, but there's a whole 2nd half left!); U.S. plays Ghana later on this afternoon. Hopefully both will advance, although it will be quite a dilemma if they both advance and meet at the next round! Still, thrilling football (or soccer as they call it here in the U.S.)! Are you watching? You should! ;)

Diamonds are NOT my best friend

The link for the title of this post is to a documentary about the Diamond Empire. I had my doubts about diamonds previously, which became more solidified after watching the movie Blood Diamond . I had been somewhat aware of conflict diamonds but realized that if diamonds are used to fuel the conflicts that bloody the continent that is one of my homes, I wanted no part of it - unless of course they were conflict-free (or lab-created). And then I watched this documentary and learned of a diamond empire that has been unethically built over a century, at the cost of Africans, South Africa's apartheid, and much more. But if that wasn't enough, those who grew this diamond empire created a deception so that consumers (both women and men) believed, and still believe, that diamonds are a girl's best friend, and that they are "forever"; they have created the impression that diamonds are rare and extremely valuable, only because they make it that way - controlling what goes

Spring is around the corner!

Every winter sooner or later yields to spring, and we are beginning to see these signs here on the island. The warmth of the sun and the blue skies are truly a joyous sight to behold! Even if I have to be indoors for some time, it is comforting to see that bright sunshine when I look outside my office window. We have had some rain and cloudiness for 4 straight days - has not been fun at all; but the comforting thought was that the temperatures were no longer in the 30s during the day. So now we are looking at 50s during the day, which is absolutely fantastic! And the trees already are showing their buds, some still quite small while others slightly bigger; the birds are chirping; and the humans are just enjoying a chance to shed a layer or two of clothing. Yes indeed, spring is around the corner, and warmer weather is here to stay!

Four years and blogging....

I have been blogging for four years now, wow. I just looked back at my entries and had to laugh at some of them. It's amazing how time flies, and all the more amazing how people change - me in particular. The past four years have taken me through so many adventures and so many different places - physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. And I'm glad to see it and recognize it. I'd like to think that those adventures have influenced me to become a more mature and better person, without losing the ability to be light-hearted and child-like. :) I think, for me, it's a terrible thing to have not made any change for the better in oneself, even if the change may be ever so small; and, it is also a lamentable thing to lose one's ability to be child-like - two things I continue to strive for, among others. :D  I'm looking forward to the next four years, and looking forward to the next batch of adventures! And of course, I'll blog as much as time permits! :

Walking in a Winter Wonder-island

Image
Although Christmas has long gone, it is still very much winter here on the island. We've had some blizzards and some snow days as well as quite a few winter weather advisories. And boy is it cold! But the snow makes everything just pretty and white! And it promotes thoughts of Christmas songs in my head. Why the other day I was singing Deck the Halls! But of course, with the snow comes the slush and the pains of getting around at times. Parking lots shrink because there are mounds of snow parked in them; driveways get narrow because the snow piles accumulate there; and salt and snow sneak into your house by silently hitching a ride on the soles of your boots. And the melting snow re-freezing into slabs of ice hidden under a coat of fresh fallen snow makes for some real slippery paths when walking. But still, I enjoy how the trees get coated with white and how fresh fallen snow reminds me of powdered sugar on beignets and cakes. Somehow I find little joys that at least make me appre
